I’m excited to share with you that I was recently featured in Voyage Minnesota Magazine!
The interview gave me a chance to reflect back on my journey with photography began. Believe it or not, my very first memorable experience with photography wasn’t even with a camera — it was in third grade making photograms in a darkroom. Watching those images slowly appear in the chemicals had me hooked right away. By middle school, I had my own darkroom at home (thanks, Dad), and that was the start of something that has stayed with me ever since.
Over the years, I’ve done a variety of photography — weddings, portraits, commercial work — to help pay the bills. But, what I really love is landscape photography. Landscape photography has always been a natural fit for me, blending my lifelong enjoyment of camping and the outdoors with the challenge of chasing beautiful light. Over the years, I’ve photographed beautiful spots in Minnesota (especially at our state parks), many of our national parks, and even captured images abroad. Some of my work has found its way into magazines and books, and now more recently homes across the country through Fine Art America. (I actually discovered several photographs of mine locally at Benedictine Living Community.)
In the interview, I also shared a little about the challenges of keeping up with the ever-changing world of cameras, software and now drones. But honestly, the part that matters most in photography is still the same as it was when I first started: paying attention to the light. Photography literally means “drawing with light,” and I’ve learned that good light can transform even the most ordinary scene into something worth capturing.
When it comes to “success,” I don’t just measure it by money or sales (though I’m grateful for everyone who has purchased my work and hung it on their walls!). For me, photography has been about the experiences — the early mornings, the beautiful sunrises, the countless wildlife encounters and the creative outlet it’s given me. That’s the success I enjoy.
