I always enjoy our town celebration: The Defeat of Jesse James Days. (Remember, it is not “Jesse James Days.”) It is one of the largest town celebrations in Minnesota and managed by a ton of volunteers. It has been held since 1948. Thank you to all of those who make it happen!
If you live in Minnesota and have not attended this event, you will want to put it on your calendar. It is held the first weekend after Labor Day. Book your hotels early, or stay with friends. We have room at our house. 🙂
My family has lived in Northfield more than 25 years, and we always make time to go downtown. We love to eat a meal, watch the shootout and visit some of the art vendors. There are rides to enjoy, a parade on Sunday, soap box derby and much, much more. For us, this event really signals the close of summer for us, so it is bitter sweet.
If you like to take pictures, this is a great event to bring your gear along. I still love to bring my camera downtown even after seeing the celebration for nearly three decades. One of the best events to photograph is the bank raid reenactment.
This year, I took a few standard photos, but I also decided to drag my shutter a bit. I was shooting this live action event with a shutter speed of 1/40th or 1/30th of a second. Normally, I’d be shooting to stop action with a shutter speed of 1/250th or higher. By slowing down my shutter and going for photographs that had some blur to them, it meant I didn’t get many “keeper” shots. Those that had interesting blur with some sharpness are the ones I decided to keep. There were very few, but I knew that is how it would work out.
